On 6 December, the Migration Research Group (MRG) and CFOM hosted a joint event focusing on ‘Migration in the Media’. The event brought together journalists and academics to discuss the changing media narrative of the migration and asylum system. The event was hosted in The Diamond at the University of Sheffield and chaired by Lindsay Pantry from the School of Journalism, Media and Communication at the University of Sheffield.
Speakers included Nicola Kelly from The Guardian; Dr Tesfalem Yemane from the University of Liverpool; and Abdalle Mumin, Journalist in Exile and Researcher, University of York.
The event highlighted the important role that the media has in reporting responsibly on the migration and asylum process. Speakers indicated that there were reasons to be concerned with the current rhetoric surrounding migration and asylum, noting that it could be considered inflamatory in certain circumstances.
