Every year CFOM and the School of Information, Journalism and Communication at the University of Sheffield organise International Journalism Week (IJW). IJW aims to reinforce CFOM’s educational goals by inviting young and future journalists from within the department to attend a series of talks by practitioners, researchers and educators and participate in a series of activities and workshops over the course of the week.

International Journalism Week took place from 3-6 November 2024 and this year’s focus was on Journalism in the age of drone warfare and democratic decline. CFOM hosted a panel event to commemorate International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (IDEI). The panel was opened by International Director, William Horsley, who delivered his farewell lecture: ‘A life in journalism; and its death foretold’. Discussion focused on the current state of media freedom in a time of rising authoriatrianism. Following William’s lecture, a panel event was then hosted moderated by William with guest speakers Tami Hoffman, Director of Public Policy, the Guardian, and Ross Higgins, Head of Bellingcat’s Financial Investigations Team. The panel event, ‘Journalism and defence of truth in an AI-shaped world’, examined the dangers and opportunities of AI in journalism. You can find out more about the panel here.
