On the 3 May every year, World Press Freedom Day is held. World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993. CFOM has been involved in a number of World Press Freedom Day conferences across the globe. Below is more details on their engagement with WPFD.
WPFD 2016
CFOM’s International Director William Horsley, Chair, Professor Jackie Harrison, and Research Associate, Dr Sara Torsner, took part in WPFD 2016 held in Helsinki, Finland.
WPFD 2017
The creation of the Journalism Safety Research Network (JSRN) was heralded as an important initiative to engage in collaborative research and was added to the Jakarta Declaration at WPFD 2017.
WPFD 2018
Professor Jackie Harrison, William Horsley and Dr Sara Torsner made up the team from CFOM who travelled to Accra, Ghana to take part in WPFD 2022 and to promote the work of the JSRN.
WPFD 2019
In 2019, the CFOM Team took part in WPFD 2019 held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where Professor Harrison presented on the role that academia can play in helping to protect journalists.
WPFD 2020
WPFD 2020 was held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Members of the CFOM Team contributed a paper to proceedings focusing on media information literacy and journalism safety.
WPFD 2021
2021 WPFD saw CFOM co-organise the 6th Academic Conference on the Safety of Journalists. CFOM researchers also discussed their work on monitoring and social media attacks.
WPFD 2022
WPFD 2022 was held in Punta del Este, Uruguay. Members of the CFOM team travelled to take part in the seventh Academic Conference to discuss human rights standards.
WPFD 2023
WPFD 2023 will be held in New York, United States. CFOM is co-organising the academic conference discussing freedom of expression as a driver for other human rights
WPFD 2024
CFOM took part in WPFD 2024 by helping to organise the academic conference and hosting an online panel alongside recording a podcast episode focusing on the threats journalists face.
