CFOM Intern
Umanga Perera joined CFOM as an intern in 2020. She holds an MA in International Public and Political Communications from the University of Sheffield. Her dissertation research revolved around Qatar’s Sri Lankan expatriate community’s reaction to Tamim Al Majd, a form of nationalist propaganda that emerged during the 2017 Saudi-led diplomatic embargo. Her research confirmed the notions of civic nationalism experienced by the participants alongside exploring the concept of rallying around the flag with non-citizens. Her research interests are mainly focused on the state of Qatar and its relationship with media freedom. She hopes to pursue a PhD in the future revolving around the treatment of Al Jazeera in Qatar in comparison to its local English-language newsrooms.
