To commemorate World Press Freedom Day 2025, the Journalism Safety Research Network (JSRN) hosted an online symposium focusing on AI and Journalism where presentations focused on issues concerning the transformative role of AI in journalism and content creation; the ethical challenges of AI in journalism; issues concerning AI and mis/disinformation and how newsrooms and journalism education are engaging with AI.
Panel One
In the first panel, speakers included Adi Wibowo Octavianto who spoke about AI as a collaborative ally in journalism. Ngozi Comfort Omojunikanbi spoke about the role of AI in journalism in Nigeria. Anshu Arora spoke about the role that AI will play in the future while George Latif Sedhom spoke about how AI can help to tackle mis/disinformation. Finally, Dipannita Das talked about the use of AI in local journalism.




Panel Two
In panel two, Tomás Dodds began by talking about the AI Turn in Journalism: Disruption, Adaptation, and Democratic Futures. Ritesh Ranjan spoke about the use of AI in the fight against misinformation. Laeed Zaghlami discussed how AI can be used to empower the public while Dali Osepashvili discussed the ethical challenges surrounding the use of AI. Laura Pranteddu closed the panel with a talk surrounding AI and Public Service Media.
Panel Three
Lindsay Pantry opened panel three with a presentation on how we can use AI in journalism education. Rana Arafat discussed how AI is being used in the MENA Region while Astrid Vandendaele spoke about the challenges with visual AI in Dutch media. Asmita Roy and Dhruv Sumanbhai Chauhan closed the symposium with a focus on AI and content creation.
