The 7th World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) Academic Conference on the Safety of Journalists was organised by UNESCO and the Republic of Uruguay. It was hosted in a hybrid format in Punta Del Este. The conference addressed the digital era’s impact on journalism safety, access to information and privacy.

The 6th World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) Academic Conference on the Safety of Journalists was organised by UNESCO and the Government of Namibia. It was hosted in Windhoek. “Information as a Public Good” was the theme of the conference.

Addis Ababa, 2019
The 4th Academic Conference on the Safety of Journalists was organised by UNESCO, the Department of Journalism and Communication at Makerere University and the research group MEKK (media, war and conflict) at OsloMet University, in partnership with the University of Malaga and the University of Sheffield (Centre for Freedom of the Media) during World Press Freedom Day in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2019.

As an outcome of the conference the journal Media and Communication published a special issue entitled ‘Rethinking Safety of Journalists‘ (2020, Volume 8, Issue 1) edited by Kristin Orgeret and William Tayeebwa. All articles are open access.
Accra, 2018
The conference was organised by UNESCO and the School of Information and Communication Studies, University of Ghana in collaboration also with the University of Sheffield during World Press Freedom Day in Accra, Ghana, 2018. In connection with the Academic Conference a Policy Lab was also held on the topic of national mechanisms for prevention, protection against and prosecution of violence against journalists: emerging models and their effectiveness.

Helsinki, 2016
The Research Conference was organised by UNESCO and the UNESCO Chair at University of Gothenburg in collaboration with IAMCR, University of Sheffield, University of Helsinki and University of Tampere during World Press Freedom Day in Helsinki, Finland, on 3 and 4 May 2016. During the Conference the Centre for Freedom of the Media, CFOM at the University of Sheffield, and UNESCO announced the launch of the Journalism Safety Research Network to strengthen future academic networking and collaboration in the area.
