International Women’s Day 2021: new research details the torrent of social media attacks targeting Filipino-American journalist Maria Ressa

New research released on March 8, which marks International Women’s Day, provides the most comprehensive assessment to date of the online violence against a prominent women journalist. The research which was published by the International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ) and conducted by Centre for Freedom of the Media (CFOM) members Julie Posetti, Diana Maynard and Kalina Bontcheva consists of a big data analysis “of the torrent of social media attacks on internationally celebrated digital media pioneer Maria Ressa over a five-year period (2016-2021)”.

A legend of Turkish journalism was assassinated for his work 28 years ago: Is Europe willing to defend journalists at risk today?

Uğur Mumcu, a renowned Turkish investigative journalist and columnist for the leading newspaper Cumhuriyet, was murdered just 28 years ago, in a car bomb explosion on 24 January 1993. The perpetrators of that crime have never been brought to justice, but Mumcu’s death has been the focus of public commemoration in Turkey. Mumcu defined journalism as the medium that ‘talks about struggles in all areas of life’.
